DER and DAR Services
Designated Engineering Representative (DER) and Designated
Airworthiness Representative (DAR)
Before introducing a new type of aircraft or product
into commercial service, a manufacturer or aircraft
modifier must obtain certification by the FAA that the
aircraft meets safety standards. The manufacturer must
supply the FAA with detailed analyses as well as produce
a prototype of the aircraft or product.
The FAA Designee (DER and DAR) system enables the
FAA to utilize highly qualified private individuals
to perform the examinations, testing and inspections
necessary to determine compliance with applicable
airworthiness standards. Although paid by industry,
DERs and DARs act as surrogates for the FAA in examining
aircraft designs.
