SFAR 88 Compliance Services

Following the 1996 TWA 800 accident, which may have been caused by a fuel explosion in the center wing tank, the FAA issued regulations to establish several new transport airplane fuel tank safety requirements. The impact of SFAR 88 is revalidation of fuel tank system designs on existing airplanes carrying 30 or more passengers or a payload greater than 7,500 lbs.

Regulatory Overview

  • Special Federal Aviation Regulation for Fuel Tank System Fault Tolerance Evaluation Requirements (SFAR 88-1), Docket NO. FAA-1999-6411-49
  • Each aircraft serial number is unique and requires analysis and resolution
  • Effective Date: SFAR 88 Final Rule became effective on June 6, 2001
  • Compliance Deadline: December 6, 2004.
